JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Prime Minister Solly Msimanga, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has already started his campaign, promising to fight corruption and drug abuse, to repair the police and to create jobs when he becomes the first citizen of the province.

Msimanga was selected as the Gauteng candidate of the official opposition after interviews with a selection panel almost a month ago.

He defeated his opponents, including member of the provincial legislature Makashule Gana, the deputy federal president Refiloe Ntsekhe and member of parliament Ghaleb Cachalia.

The DA says that Gauteng will be a central battlefield in the election campaign for next year's general election and believes that Msimanga as the face of the campaign can help the party win the province.

Msimanga has already mentioned his campaign promises.

"We want to fight corruption, repair SA Police Services, create fair access to real and long-term jobs for the people of Gauteng, fight the plague of drug abuse and speed up the delivery of services."

What happens to his responsibilities as mayor of Tshwane?

"I am not going to resign, I will remain the mayor."

Msimanga will undoubtedly have his plate full of campaign obligations, but he promises to find a balance to ensure that the people of Tshwane do not suffer.
