PRETORIA – Judge Dennis Davis described how his problem with suspended Commissioner Tom Moyane was that he drafted reports and advised the Minister of Finance on tax matters without any information or cooperation from the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
The judge, who is the head of the Davis Tax Committee who advises the finance minister, testified Friday in the Nugent Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.
Robert Nugent, retired judge, investigates the tax authorities and the board since the appointment of Moyane in 2014.
Judge Davis says that he tried his best to explain to Moyane that it was his role to advise the Minister of Finance.
"There was no justification for it, every time I received a letter and it was long letters, I responded and asked for a meeting, I asked Mr. Moyane to explain to him that what he was doing did not interest me. what interested me was to give the Minister the best possible physical advice I could and I'm afraid to say that they were always asked the question. "
Davis says his relationship with Sars has improved considerably since Moyane was suspended.
