Port Elizabeth – A forty year old policeman from Port St Johns has appeared in court on 14 fraud figures amounting to R42,000.
Hawks spokesman, Captain Anelisa Feni, said Sergeant Melumzi Mnakaniso appeared Friday at Port St Johns Magistrate's Court for fraud.
Mnakaniso is attached to the police of Qumbu and was arrested last Thursday after an investigation into alleged fraudulent incidents and travel allowances. These were submitted for apparent official trips to Port Elizabeth that took place between 2012 and 2014, while he was stationed at the Lusikisiki police station.
Feni said it was further claimed that he had filed fraudulent subpoenas on the pretext that he was attending court cases – while these cases were finalized or withdrawn.
Mnakaniso is also accused of filing bills from a Port Elizabeth Bed and Breakfast that no longer exists. He would also have filed tax rate claims after obtaining false invoices from a local taxi company.
The officer received bail from R1500. He is expected in court on 12 November.
