Knysna – Four men, including the 58-year-old Knysna council member Velile Waxa, appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's court on Thursday in connection with the murder of the local ANC board member Victor Molosi last month.
The 50-year-old Molosi, who was the councilor representing the African National Congress (ANC) for district 8 of the coastal town, which includes areas Concordia and Jewish Camp, was killed by an archer on the night of July 23rd.
Molosi left the Concordia High School where he attended a school board meeting when an archer approached him and fired several shots at him. One of the shots struck him in his head and he died on his way to a local hospital.
Molosi was not only a municipal councilor, but also the ANC chief whip in Knysna and the deputy secretary of the South Cape of the party. 19659003] Five men have since been arrested in connection with Molosi's murder after a specialized police team consisting of provincial and cluster detectives was formed to investigate the case.
The first suspect who was arrested was the 39-year-old Knysna Taxi Forum secretary Mandla Tyololo. He has since been accused of conspiracy to murder.
On Tuesday, four suspects were arrested, but the accusations against one have since been canceled. The South Cape police spokesman, Captain Malcolm Pojie, said that the reason for his release was due to a lack of evidence.
The other three, Waxa, the 42-year-old Mawande Makhala, the 37-year-old Vela Patrick Dumile have since been accused of murder and appeared in court with Tyololo on Thursday.
The case was postponed until 23 August for a formal bail application by Tyololo, Waxa and Dumile. Makhala left his right to bail.
A verdict was made in the courtroom where the media were excluded from taking or distributing photos of the accused in anticipation of further investigation into the case.
Hundreds of Knysna residents had gathered outside the court and demanded that the suspects are not released on bail. Some of the demonstrators included politicians, including Lionel Adendorf, a member of the ANC management committee.
Adendorf said that the murder of Molosi had left him "deeply hurt". He spoke to the crowd after a procedure in which she echoed that the accused bail would be refused. Adendorf urged residents not to do anything that might hamper the case.
