A man was arrested for the alleged murder of his 88-year-old mother in Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape, the police said on Saturday.
Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the 55-year-old man was arrested at their home in Ngcwazi village in Ngqamakhwe.
Manatha said the man beat his mother with an ax after a fight on Friday night.
His children, who were in another room, were too afraid to stop him, Manatha said.
"The grandchildren only noticed in the early hours of Saturday that their grandmother had died."
The man is expected to appear before the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate Court on Monday.
He has been accused of murder.
