Johannesburg – A 34-year-old preacher was shot dead by an unknown man during a church service in Doornkop, outside of Middelburg, said the Mpumalanga police on Thursday.
Police spokesman Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe said that on Wednesday, Pastor Christopher Mokwena performed a service at about 7:00 pm when a man forced him out of the church under threat of fire.
"The suspect would have told the congregation members to continue with the service because he had to deal with their predecessor Some of the congregations reportedly went on calling the police and Mokwena was found in a puddle of blood with bullet wounds on the upper body and was declared dead on the spot, "Bhembe said.
In a separate incident, the police are looking for two men who robbed members of their possessions in Mzinti, near Malelane.
Bhembe said that church members attended a church service when two men with balaclavas suddenly burst in and kept everyone at gunpoint.
"The suspects then deprived them of their mobile phones, money and a motor vehicle that was later abandoned in neighboring Emagogeni.
"The police have opened a murder case about the first incident and an armed robbery on the second, anyone with information that could assist the police in their investigation is requested to contact Detective Constable Lazarus Mtshweni on 072 947 3661 to the murder of the predecessor and Captain Madala Ndashe on 071 562 7596 for the robbery, "said Bhembe.
