According to police, Constable Petrus Gerhardus De Lange was on the trail of drug dealers when he was killed.
"A group of suspects in two cars drove to the vehicle in which the ranger was in. Four men got out of the vehicles with handguns and opened fire on the policeman," says police spokesman Vish Naidoo.
De Lange died on his way to the hospital.
A truck driver was also injured after being hit by a stray bullet.
This brings the number of police officers killed since April to 42.
National police commissioner Khehla Sitole has given officers 72 hours to book the perpetrators.
"We have lost 42 police officers by criminals since the beginning of this financial year.
"The number of our policemen who are attacked and killed remains unacceptable despite a proactive and reactive intervention," said Sitole.
