Durban – The family of a killed regional ANC president for department 12 in eThekwini said he had received strange phone calls before his death.

Thulani Nxumalo was shot dead Monday outside his home in KwaNdengezi.

His wife, Makhosi Nxumalo, said that her husband received calls from people who asked where he was.

She said the family knew that about two weeks ago some people had waited outside Nxumalo's house, waiting for a chance to ambush him, but he had not left home.

"Even on the day he was killed, he received numerous phone calls from someone who kept asking where he was, even switching the phone off because he was bothering him," she said.

She said that her husband had survived an attempt in his life in 2004.

Vice-President of District 12 Mbongeni Ngwenya said that he and other members of the industry were surprised about the murder. "There are no problems in the department, all comrades work well together and we have a close working relationship with the district councilor."

He described Nxumalo as a peaceful man who did not deserve to die the way he did.

Nxumalo held the function of forum forum community policing for 10 years.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said that Nxumalo had been killed after coming home from a board meeting of the Branch Committee.

"Although the information regarding his murder remains vague, Nxumalo's attackers found themselves hiding around his house and shot him several times on his arrival," said the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.

The party said it was "shocked and indignant," and described Nxumalo's murder as "brutal, harsh, and cold-blooded."

In the province, no less than 10 prominent ANC members were killed this year.

The police said that a case of murder was investigated and that the motive for the crime was unknown.
