Zelt Marais appointed as new President of WPRFU

Cape Town – Raises Marais has defeated Peter Jooste as the new president of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).

At the end of what would turn out to be a dramatic day, Marais was voted at the AGM on Monday evening after winning the majority of clubs' support in the region.

Marais replaces the departing Thelo Wakefield, who has served as president for the past six years.

Monday had given a fair amount of controversy in the run-up to the AGM, questioning the elections when Vice-President hopeful Ronald Bantom applied for an interdict for a court to have them postponed.

Bantom had objected to the fact that he had been suspended to take part in the elections.

After the matter had spent hours on the high court, it was finally decided that the elections would continue as planned and that Bantom would remain suspended.

Moneeb Levy, meanwhile, was elected deputy president, while Spencer King was unhindered Vice President after the suspension of Bantom.
