University unemployment: five unions have raised unemployment, while CONADU maintains the measure

The trade unions will meet Monday with the authorities of the Ministry of Education, after the massive march in support and defense of the public university that took place in Buenos Aires, as well as in different parts of the country, including Posadas. Five teachers' associations have raised the strike and are waiting for negotiations with the government and only the historic CONADU continues with the degree of strength.

As a result of the conflicts about public universities and after the various demonstrations and measures taken by teachers and university students in recent weeks, the expectations of a salary offer are being continued by the government. Carlos De Feo, secretary general of CONADU, said that next week, five of the six organizations that group university professors will not take any violent measures. The only federation announcing the strike – until September 8 – was a historic CONADU, which, he stressed, "is not the majority".

In this sense De Feo said that the trade unions are waiting for positive results that will be discussed with the Ministry of Education next Monday, and demand that the ministry "receives an answer in accordance with their claim". Since March, the Executive offered a salary increase of 15%, which was rejected by the trade unions because they required an increase of 30% plus an update clause.

The leader of the CONADU recalled that they signed a 35% salary increase in 2016, but that the inflation was ultimately 41%. Which meant a significant loss for teachers. "Last year's agreement contained a clause and purchasing power remained, and this year we want the same to happen," he said.

He also explained that the planned meeting was canceled on Friday because "there was no frame of reference for the exchange crisis to discuss a salary plan." "We started negotiating on the first day of March and we have been on the road for seven months, on Monday we need an acceptable proposal," he said.

With regard to mobilization last Thursday, said that "a review of society stressed, which increases the pressure on the Ministry of Education." "This week, the minister takes part in the parity for the first time and removes the ceiling of 15% (…) I think the ministry will have noticed that hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated in defense of the public university," he said.

On the other hand, explained that the wage claim is "an emerging in a much more serious situation that the budgetary situation is." And he was positive in that they will be able to unlock the conflict: "I think we are going to continue to solve this problem, the most important thing is to have a solution that has to do with reality."

The Monday meeting will take place at 17:00 at the Sarmiento Palace and will be led by the national minister of education, Alejandro Finocchiaro, and the minister of university policy, Danya Tavela. During the meeting the referees will be present from the National Federation of University Teachers (CONADU), Historical CONADU, Federation of Teachers of Universities (FEDUN), Confederation of Teaching Workers of the Argentine Republic (CTERA), Union of Argentine Teachers (UDA) and association of teachers of the national technological university (FAGDUT).
