Govt warns companies about high fuel prices

The federal government will take action if motorists are ripped off about fuel prices, the treasurer says.

Rod Sims believes motorists are paying four cents a litre more than usual.

"Petrol retailers say this is due to higher costs." "We told the customer that it is about 1c (in costs). Australian.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government would like to see any changes in the price of premium petrol hit $ 1.90 a liter over the past week.

"If there are any recommendations to government, or course, we will consider those," he told Nine Network.

"What we understand is our petrol market is that it is driven to some extent, with the Australian dollar, but also with global oil prices.

"But if companies here are ripping off consumers then we will take action."
