Washington D.C. [USA], 2 September (ANI): Mothers-in-progress, pay attention! According to a recent study, reducing lying sleep – lying horizontally with the face and trunk upwards during late pregnancy – can improve the health of the mother and the fetus.
The results show that the median time spent on sleeping was significantly reduced from 48.3 minutes during the control night to 28.5 minutes during the intervention night. An improvement was observed in both maternal and fetal parameters during the intervention force, with an increase in median minimal maternal oxygen saturation, less maternal oxygen saturation and fewer fetal heart rate delays.
"Our findings suggest that women can comfortably sleep with a device around their waist that actually prevents them from sleeping on their backs," said lead researcher Jane Warland of the University of South Australia.
"The use of positional therapy to keep the pregnant mother away from her can reduce the supine position in late pregnancy and can also benefit both the health of the mother and the fetus, with minimal impact on the mother perception of sleep quality and sleep time. . "
According to the authors, most pregnant women spend about 25 percent of their sleep in the supine position, which may be a risk factor for stillbirth and low birth weight. This relationship may partly be the result of an exacerbation of sleep disturbances in breathing and withdrawal of oxygen from the fetus when sleeping on the back.
Although position therapy is a generally accepted way to reduce sleep time in the back and to increase sleep on the side in adults with sleep disturbances in the breathing, there are no previous studies that have investigated the use in pregnant women.
"Wearing a device that minimizes sleep and is comfortable and does not affect the sleep length or quality of the mother can be an easy way to reduce stillbirth, especially if the mother is at increased risk from other factors," Warland said.
The findings appear in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. (ANI)
