COLES stores across the country closed more than three hours on Sunday morning due to a technical problem with the supermarket's checkout.
"We apologize," read a printed message outside a number of shops with shutters. "This store is currently closed due to circumstances beyond our control, we are working to resolve this issue and will reopen as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience."
The problem was national, but not all stores were closed . Coles did not inform customers about store closures via Facebook or Twitter.
After hours of silence, the supermarket made a statement immediately after 10 am stating that all stores were "open and traded".
"Earlier this morning we had some minor IT problems in some of our supermarkets that were beyond the control of our team," the statement said. "We apologize for any inconvenience that our customers experienced this morning."
Customers took over social media to vent their frustration.
"Break out of the house to do some solo shopping and discover that all computers are turned off," wrote a Twitter user. "Note to yourself: always sleep."
Another said that they & # 39; had witnessed three different people who continue as clowns & # 39; when they saw that the supermarket was closed. "Aussies are so spoiled and dramatic," they wrote.
"You would think it was the end of the world as some people continue," another added.
One customer wrote on Facebook: "To the Coles Glenroy staff – thank you for staying open, and for updates on what was going on with the registers, I really appreciate your work!"
Another said: "Would be good if you could post something that explains what is going on with your stores that are closed this morning! No explanation on the door – except" unforeseen circumstances "."
On the Coles Gungahlin in Canberra, employees reportedly handed out free donuts and additional Little Shop miniatures to customers affected by the outage.
One customer said they had waited 45 minutes at the checkout. "There were only two registers occupied, and absolutely no information from the management about the problem," they wrote.
Another complained that they heard of the outage on the news but not on the Coles Facebook page. "Come on Coles, if your stores have problems at least have the decency to inform the public instead of waiting for news services to break the news," they wrote.

@Coles supermarkets in NSW are closed this morning because of "unforeseen circumstances". The staff of one store told me that it is a "system problem". It will probably be a bumper morning for @woolworths and @ALDIAustralia

Great work of the staff of @ coles Gungahlin distributes donuts for free to customers who have been affected by a malfunction. The extra miniature was also appreciated.

The reactions of people during @Coles register meltdown shows the real humanity. Panic, rest, tears, and some guy who watched Brooklyn 99 on Netflix. Fantastic. #coles
