The man dies after he is set on fire and left for Newcastle behind the road



A man died after being burned to the edge of a road in Macquaire, north of Sydney.

The 23-year-old was seriously injured after being burnt and left for dead, police said.

The father of two told his girlfriend that he was out with a friend last night, before a cab driver found him around 1 o'clock in the morning at the edge of Oakdale Road in Newcastle.

After the emergency services arrived and treated him on the spot, he was flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital, but died during the flight.

His girlfriend, Paige Millan, told 9NEWS that she was confused and distraught

"I just want to say that I love him and I just want to know what happened," she said

Detectives who have closed the kilometer closures on Oakdale Road now grabbed a gas can and dropped evidence of the scene

Authorities conducted line searches along the main road and 30 meters to bushland nearby, trying to find more evidence that could suggest how the man was so badly wounded

They are also attractive to members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activities to assist them in the investigation.
