Sydney FC signs former Dutch international Siem de Jong

SYDNEY FC unveiled Siem de Jong as their new A-League marquee and signed the former Ajax captain for a season-long loan.

The former Dutch international, who also played in the Premier League for Newcastle United, can play both a No.10 and striker and complete the attacking arsenal of Sky Blues under the new coach Steve Corica.

De Jong, 29, arrives a few days after the English striker Adam le Fondre and becomes the second marquee of the powerhouse club next to player Milos Ninkovic.

"I am very excited to represent Sydney FC this year and I am looking forward to my time in the A-League," said De Jong.

"I see many similarities between Sydney FC and Ajax, they are both leaders in their class with a reputation for silverware and I want to maintain that here.

"I want nothing more than success and I will help the team in any way to achieve our goals by winning all the trophies we have won this season."

De Jong arrives in Sydney after a difficult year in which he was regarded by the Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez as surplus requirements and struggled to start in his second stint at Ajax.

During his first stint between 2007 and 2014 he led the Amsterdam heavyweights and helped them with four Eredivisie titles.

A move to the Premier League team Newcastle yielded 22 appearances before being loaned to PSV Eindhoven and eventually returning to Ajax.

The Young has not been so nice over the years, although his score from the bank is still good.

"Siem is a technically gifted footballer and I think this season can be successful for us," said Corica.

"He scores goals and makes them for others and he is a player who will excite Sydney FC members.

"You will not be Ajax captain without all the necessary qualities for that job and I believe he can bring those qualities to Sydney FC and help our team this year.

"This is a new challenge for Siem, I am sure that he is one he can embrace, and I am sure he will fit in seamlessly."

De Jong will wear the No.22 shirt while fellow-recent new signer Adam Le Fondre No. 9 will wear.

Sydney still has one visa place on their schedule.
