A few days ago we heard that WhatsApp and Google are joining forces and soon the WhatsApp chat backups stored in Google Drive do not count for the allocated Google storage quota. That is a great news for users. Now Google Drive has started to inform WhatsApp users and in an e-mail they have told that WhatsApp chat backups stored in the Drive from November 12 & # 39; free & # 39; will be.
However, in the same email, Google and WhatsApp also show that backup chats that were not refreshed before November 12 will be removed.
So good news and bad news. The good news is that after November 12, Google will allow WhatsApp users to back up their chats, photos, audio and video files on Google Drive without exceeding the storage limit of Google. In simple terms, this means that you will soon be able to store all your WhatsApp data on Google Drive without worrying about your Google Drive quota.
Suppose you chose a 100 GB paid Google Drive storage plan. You can store all your WhatsApp photo & # 39; s, audio and video files without using this 100 GB storage limit on your hard drive. WhatsApp has announced that this policy will enter into force for all users on November 12, 2018, although some users may even see the quota benefits earlier.
Now the bad news, kind of. WhatsApp will delete all your chats and files if they have not been updated to the Google Drive before November 12. The keyword here is "renewed" or other words have been updated. In the email to all WhatsApp users, Google has announced that WhatsApp backups that have not been updated or refreshed in more than a year will be automatically removed from storage. Furthermore, it is recommended that people manually back up WhatsApp chats to Google Drive before November 12, 2018, in order to prevent data loss.
What does this mean in simple terms? Two things.
1- Your WhatsApp photo & # 39; s & video & # 39; s are automatically saved in the photo app of your phone. Your chats are automatically backed up and stored daily in your phone's memory. This remains available on your phone, regardless of whether you connect your WhatsApp with Google Drive or not. However, this is local storage. So if you change or reset your phone, or if your phone's storage is problematic, you will lose old chats, including photos & videos, which you may have exchanged via WhatsApp.
2- You have connected WhatsApp with Google Drive storage. You do not have to worry much in this case. Google will delete your WhatsApp chats backed up in the Drive only if those chats have not been renewed within a year. In other words, a year ago you saved some WhatsApp chats in Google Drive, but since then you have not connected your WhatsApp with the Drive. Those chats will be deleted after November 12, unless you refresh them again, or in other words, connect your WhatsApp to Google Drive again.
Complete the following steps to manually back up your WhatsApp data to Google Drive:
– Open WhatsApp.
– Go to Menu and click on Settings.
– Tap Chats.
– Go to the backup option. You can see your last backup date here and also choose to back up your data.
