Xiamen Air flight skids off NAIA runway; flights canceled

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – A plane from China slipped on a runway during landing at Ninoy Aquino International Airport before midnight on Friday, resulting in the cancellation of some flights and the diversion of some others while the runway was closed for cleanup actions. [19659004] The Manila International Airport Authority said that all 157 passengers and crew members of Xiamen Air flight MF8667 have been evacuated from the aircraft and are safe. They were transported to a nearby hotel and stayed there until the activities of Xiamen Air were resumed, he said.

NAIA international runway 06/24 closed due to the incident.

Eric Apolonio, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority or the Philippines, told reporters that the aircraft will remain on the runway until the probers have completed an investigation into the incident. The runway must also be removed from foreign objects and debris before it can be declared operational.

A report from the Philippine News Agency quotes MIAA Public Affairs Department OIC Ma. Consuelo Bungag said that some international flights "using aircraft type A320 and lower" could in the meantime use the domestic runway of NAIA.

A plane flying off the runway at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport led to the cancellation of a few flights and the diversion of others.

A Xiamen Air flight MF8667 left the runway before midnight due to bad weather. No one was injured in the incident and the passengers of the flight were taken to a hotel.
