Cheese infected with dangerous diarrhea pathogens

Pathogenic E. coli found in French cheese

The Federal Agency for Consumer Protection and Food Safety and Lidl Germany are currently warning against a French cheese marketed by Lidl. In one study, pathogenic E. coli bacteria were found in the product, which can sometimes cause serious diarrhea disorders.

It is the cheese "Morbier AOP made with raw milk, 250 grams" from the French manufacturer "SA Perrin Vermot" with the expiration date of March 17, 2019. Furthermore, the cheese in question is the lot number 042 and the identity number FR 25-155 – At 001 CE recognizable. The product may not be consumed due to the health risk.

The cheese was offered in almost all states

As Lidl Germany announced, the product covered by the recall was sold in all Länder except Bremen, Hamburg, Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein. Only the above-mentioned article also applies. "For reasons of consistent consumer protection, Lidl Germany reacted immediately and removed the product from sale," Lidl writes in customer data on the company's website. The cheese can be supplied in all Lidl branches. Customers then receive the purchase price without presenting the receipt.

Note: some groups are particularly vulnerable

As the federal government and Lidl emphasize, customers must take this recall seriously. Infants, toddlers, the elderly and people with a weakened immune system can, in particular, develop serious illnesses due to the Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli bacterium (EHEC) found. According to the Robert Koch Institute, symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, stomach colic, bloody diarrhea, nausea and vomiting may occur as a result of an EHEC infection. In particularly severe cases, the kidneys are affected so badly that kidney failure occurs. In rare cases this can even lead to the death of those affected. (Ex)
