The caries frequency in children of school age is decreasing, but the caries is increasing. Almost half of the new school children in Austria are struggling with it, it said at a press conference on the occasion of the "Month of Oral Health" with a focus on pediatric dentistry in Vienna.

For example, infantile caries is the most common chronic disease in early childhood, said Katrin Bekes, director of pediatric dentistry at the University Dental Clinic Vienna. The disease is five times more common than asthma. "Bekes was skeptical about the goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) to achieve caries free life by 2020 by 80 percent of the 6-year-olds.

Wolfgang Kopp, vice president of the dental room, stressed that it is primarily the parents who need to be asked to fulfill their important role in health education. "Danger threatens especially with children, who get a lot of sweetened drinks from the bottle." The dentist's room requires the inclusion of a dental examination in the mother-child passport.
