What the colored ribbons are really good for – News Knowledge: Medicine & Psychology

In the summer, when people show a lot of naked skin, you often see them: the colorful, plaster stripes on shoulder blades and knees, along the spine or over sun-tanned bellies. When the first copies appeared on the bodies of competing athletes at the 2004 Olympics, they were still ridiculed as a fashion accessory. In the meantime, the Physio tapes have also established themselves in the normal population as a serious and approved medical device for health care. One that, among other things, strengthens muscles, improves mobility and heals injuries. And not only in the warm season.

As the physiotherapist Stephan Mogel testifies to the practice in Wettingen AG, patients are increasingly asking for therapeutic tapes because they would have used the same symptoms in a colleague. But ties are also prescribed by general practitioners, for example in addition to physiotherapy. As the founder of the company Kinesio Switzerland, Stephan Mogel trains around 1000 every year doctor. Masseurs, osteopaths, occupational therapists and sports scientists in the taping technique. The 42-year-old says: "There are many areas of application – including sports traumatology, orthopedics, internal medicine, rheumatology and even gynecology." The original names are Kinesio tapes – from "kinesiology", which means as much as movement science means.

Kinesio tires of good quality are made of cotton fabric, elastane threads and acrylic glue. Acrylic because, in contrast to latex, it hardly causes allergic reactions. The elasticity of the straps is modeled after that of the outer skin layer, so that they appear as a second skin. Because they are hardly observed, it is not easy to understand the mechanism by which the strips are effective.

"A tape does not necessarily belong to where the pain is."Stephan Mogel, physiotherapist

The basic idea of taping is that moderate physical exercise is beneficial in many healing processes. Unlike a normal support bandage, the range of movement of the patient is not limited by the highly elastic tape. Injured or overworked muscles are spared, but still slightly loaded. Stephan Mogel explains: "The receptors in the outer skin layer receive a continuous mechanical stimulus from the band and report to the brain: here you have to activate this muscle!" At the same time, joints are brought into a better position through the attraction of the tape, which increases mobility and relieves pain. In addition, the skin is minimally lifted by the band and moved against the underlying tissue during movement.

"This promotes blood circulation and thus the distribution of anti-inflammatory substances over the smallest blood vessels," says Stephan Mogel. Last but not least, physio tapes – as the bands are also called – decongestant, because they stimulate the pump function in the veins and lymph vessels.

Autosuggestion plays a role

Are the tapes ineffective, simply because the wearer believes in their effects? "Of course," says Stephan Mogel, "is autosuggestion involved, why not?" Because if a band reminds the patient to sit 50 times a day, the posture actually improves and the pain decreases. "The tape activates an endogenous self-healing system and gives us a push in the right direction."

Taping was devised by the Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase. In the 1970s he repeatedly made the same remark in his practice: when he pulled the shoulder of a patient too far forward, he said: "Wow, that feels good, can not you give me your hand?" The self-adhesive tapes that Kenzo Kase began to develop were an attempt to extend the therapeutic effect beyond treatment – making the entry of his hand almost permanent. A tape can be worn for up to a week until it begins to peel off.

The effectiveness of Kinesio tapes has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. One of them, performed by Stephan Mogel himself: for his dissertation at the University of Salzburg, he had 110 subjects perform various strength and stretching exercises – once with and once without tape on the back of the thigh muscles. His strength and mobility measurements showed that almost all participants (both athletes and non-athletes) performed better with tape than without them. Without the & # 39; collaboration & # 39; however, a therapeutic tape will not cure from the patient.

"It is always a partial measure within a treatment, such as a classical physiotherapy," says Stephan Mogel. The list of problems The inclusion of offers is long. Particularly promising are the following: muscle tension and tension, back pain, dislocated shoulder (dislocation), tennis elbow, tendinitis, lumbago, cruciate ligament injuries, Achilles tendon overload, hip collision (congestion in the joint), growth disturbances in the foot and the oblique toe (hallux).

Activate instead of silent

But taping also comes in arthrosis on the train: the chronic joint disease
occurs, for example, in the hip, if the buttocks are not properly positioned
works. The ligaments and tendons then have to hold the joint alone. For stability
In order to mediate, they gather together and cause pressure on the articular cartilage
exercises. These are beginning to fall apart. Because the connection is now even more unstable,
Tendons and ligaments contract all the more. "A tape can break this vicious circle by stimulating the muscles to get their work back," explains Stephan Mogel. "The pressure in the joint decreases, the cartilage can grow again, the discomfort decreases."

"Instead of compression stockings, you can stop a thrombosis with a tape."Stephan Mogel, physiotherapist

A tape can also help with whiplash. By being overloaded
Accident, a muscle is weakened, which he tries to compensate himself
braced. Often doctors then recommend that the cramped muscle is as quiet as possible
offer. An error, as Stephan Mogel thinks: "With a tape in the right place
You can reactivate and strengthen the affected muscle. "Also
a migraine-type stress type headache that could include blurred vision
are being tapped, says the expert, on condition that he is triggered by an abuse
used to be. When we sink in the office chair and chin
Slide the screen, creating pressure in the neck. "I'm taking this away
I give the spine with a tape the impulse for the erection. »

Applied to the abdomen, an adhesive tape can even cope with menstrual pain, says Stephan Mogel. "When the womb contracts,
this will cause tension on the tires they hold. It hurts. "With the tape, the physical therapist tries to imitate what women intuitively do against pain: supporting the abdominal tissue with the hand upwards.
Even a baby with a colic of three months can be relieved of his abdominal pain
to be. "It's about relaxing the peritoneum, which gives the bowel more space
and the digestive gases can escape, »says Stephan Mogel.

Expertise is required

Physio tapes are also used before pain can be felt.
About when someone keeps getting humped
caught when the weeding in the garden gets tired or back quickly
Air travel. "Instead of support stockings, you can have a thrombosis with one
Stop tape if you fix it before the flight, »says Stephan Mogel.
And in athletes let the function of certain muscles with regard to
specifically stimulate new training goals.

Falling prophylaxis is another keyword for the taping specialist. This applies not only to immobile elderly people, but also to young people who have undergone surgery or are pronounced confectioneries. Because the rapidly moving muscle fibers, which can save us from falling as a result of rapid contractions, always form the back first. "They do not disappear, they prefer to forget it", says Stephan Mogel. "With tires on my thighs, buttocks or torso, I can give them a boost for a few weeks, so that they can become active again and react faster," explains Mogel. «Combined with appropriate gymnastics exercises.»

The right placement of a crane requires specific expertise and
therefore it belongs in the hands of a trained person. With a special
Research technology must look it up separately for each patient
where the tape needs to be pasted. "Because it does not necessarily belong to the
Place where the pain is, »says Stephan Mogel. A whiplash could roughly
have their origin in the neck, but equally well in the abdominal muscles.
Depending on the desired effect, the expert gives the train on the tire or not.
In addition, different cutting techniques are used. A so-called
I-tape (straight strip) is suitable for muscle activation, a Y-tape
(once incised) for swelling or scarring, and a fan band (cut several times) stimulates the venous system on the surface. After more accurate
The patient can, at the initiative of the professional, add the following tape to his or her home or be helped by a family member.

In the meantime, tires from more than 40 suppliers are available in the pharmacy or via the internet. Depending on the quality, they cost between 9 and 25 francs. break it
you can not do anything with a wrongly placed tape. In the worst case,
it does not show the intended effect. "As a band of movement and power
it can also hinder it ", says Stephan Mogel.
