Maria Vassilakou: the bumpy finish of a polarizer

The decision should have come much sooner. "I'm immediately on the point, I'm not running anymore," said Maria Vassilakou's words on Sunday. Almost no one believed that the vice mayor of Vienna, who had been head of the Viennese Greens for fourteen years, would return to the ring to be the first to run. And yet the process is irritating: why had not the Traffic Council spoken before? For weeks there was speculation about their future. The transfer is now anything but orderly, even if Vassilakou claims the opposite. The Viennese Greens are threatened by an open battle for succession. A logical successor that Vassilakou has not built.
