Ministry of the Interior and Justice want more severe penalties for rapists in the future. The reason: the number of rapes in Austria increased by 43.3 percent compared to the previous year. That is why the turquoise-blue government has approved a general exit for purely conditional prison sentences for rapists.
As Minister of the Interior Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Minister of Justice Josef Moser (ÖVP) and State Secretary Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) in the "press", there should no longer be only conditional prison sentences for rapists, but at least a part of the punishment.
Minister of Home Affairs Kickl justifies the lifelong torment with which victims of sexual violence are often confronted, "there can be no pardon for the perpetrators." A purely conditional detention is not an option, "the perpetrators must feel the full rigor of the law."
State Secretary Edtstadler can even propose a doubling of the minimum penalty to two years. A corresponding task force has already been set up that is already working at full speed.
Justice Minister Moser only agreed that "further steps will be discussed". There is no concrete timetable for the changes yet.
