In a dramatic rescue operation for helicopters, on Saturday afternoon a heavily injured German tourist was recovered from a wall in the mountains of the Dead. He had descended on the Sepp-Huber-Steig in the direction of the Almsee and collapsed 60 meters.

Bernd K. (62) wanted to cross the Dead Mountains with his wife Petra K. (64). The couple from Rostock (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) had taken off from Gössl (Liezen) to Pühringerhütte on Friday. On Saturday it should continue to Priel-Schutzhaus.

Wrong way taken

But the two moved. They accidentally came to the Sepp-Huber-Steig, which leads from the high plateau to Grünau in the valley. In a secured cable train at about 1000 meters above sea level, the 62-year-old finally slipped and crashed into a steep trench of 60 meters. He was still lucky: he stayed on the line just above a 150-meter deep abyss.

The wife of the German hit 112 on the Euro emergency call. The telephone connection was poor. She still believed that she was on her way to the Priel shelter. Therefore, the mountain rescue in Vorderstoder and Hinterstoder and the rescue helicopter Martin 3 were first warned. But because the search for the couple was not decisive, the mountain rescue Grünau and the police helicopter Dragonfly also left. The flying policemen eventually found the helpless couple high above the Almsee in the afternoon.

The first assistants who arrived were members of the Grünau Mountain Rescue. "We had to surrender ourselves to the wounded," says site manager Martin Trautwein. "When we saw the man lying, we feared the worst, because he had injuries everywhere, but he was still lucky, if he had not taken part in this leadership, he would not have survived the crash."

While the severely injured man who had broken his thigh, among other things was first delivered by the ambulance, the rescue helicopter transported his shocked woman to the valley. Then Bernd K. was flown to the Salzkammergut-Klinikum Vöcklabruck. (Ebra)
