Rapid Wien makes for the seventh time a good chance to participate in the group stage of the Europa League. On Thursday, the Green-Whites won 3-1 (2-0) in the play-off first leg against Steaua Bucharest. Rapid met Christoph Knasmüllner (4th), Mario Sonnleitner (39th) and Stefan Schwab (48th). For Bucharest, Harlem Gnohere (47.) scored the intermediate 2: 1.
The second stage will be played in Bucharest next Thursday. With a strong performance, the team of coach Goran Djuricin Steaua added the first loss after eight unbeaten matches. Djuricin was in front of 19.300 spectators in the team that provided the 4-0 victory against Slovan Bratislava last week. Captain Stefan Schwab, who had not succeeded at the weekend, was fit again.
On the grass the game started without much scanning. Even before Rapids led early, there were smaller opportunities on both sides. Rapid headed for a Romanian corner in the fourth minute after a perfect counterattack. Marvin Potzmann started Thomas Murg with a nice pass pass, Murg played at Knasmüllner and the hero of the Slovan match thoughtfully took the 1-0 lead.
Rapid then withdrew and left Steaua in control. Rapid was safe most of the time and the Romanians did not score much. Filipe Teixeira volleyed the only chance of equalizing after a corner and a mistake by Richard Strebinger (20). The fast goalkeeper did well with his adversity with a strong parade.
After less than half an hour Rapid came back stronger. The green-white whites, however, were usually dangerous after counterattacks. Attacker Deni Alar topped three good chances in the episode. First after a hook (25.) from the right, go to Schwab flank (31.) and finally after a dribble (38.). The second hit then succeeded after a standard situation.
Sonnleitner converted after 39 minutes to 2: 0 after a corner from Knasmüllner. The hard core of the Rapid fans could not be fostered by the strong performances. Just before the break they presented a banner with the text "if the desk is silent, the curve must be louder", followed by "Gogo out" cries. This meant coach Djuricin, who was already verbally attacked by the Rapid Ultras before the game started. By open letter, which was handed out for the stadium, the fan club "Gogo out!"
After a double exchange, the Romanians came out of the cabin with great speed. Substitute Florinel Coman made a good chance seconds after the restart and Steaua scored the only goal in the 47th minute. Gnohere converted a cross from Alexandru Stan up close.
Rapid quickly found the right answer. Two minutes later, Schwab increased the lead to 3: 1 after a small cross from Murg from just outside the penalty area. The Viennese also did not get the match well with their lead of two goals. It developed an open exchange of strokes. Even Rapid was not compact despite his comfortable leadership.
Steaua had better opportunities than before the break. In the 73rd minute Strebinger saved after a cross against Teixeira and Coman. In the last phase Rapid had to shudder for the lead of two goals. Veton Berisha first saw the yellow-red card in the 83rd minute after repeated foul play. Then Raul Rusescu (89 & # 39;) missed a good chance and eventually Coman hit the bar in the 90th minute.
