In the end, goalkeeper Roman Bürki gave shortly after the lucky 2-1 of his BVB on Monday evening in Greuther Fürth in the first round of the DFB Cup, yes, in the end it was "a dice victory".
That Borussia Dortmund, in charge of Lucien Favre's coaching job and some familiar transfers with new energy and new courage, would get such problems in the first competitive race of the year, had hardly expected. The fact that BVB jumped just seconds on the first day had good reasons – these are the three most important findings:
1st squadron gap
BVB misses a center after the departure of the Belgian Michy Batshuayi, so a man in the penalty area of the opponent only by physical presence for attention. Marco Reus, who despite his class started in this position in Fürth, especially against low opponents, where BVB often joins, is not the right cast for the storm center.
This was always clear in Fürth. Although Reus scored in a classic center-ahead way the 2: 1 in the 120th minute, but you could see that the national team pulled out of the box again and again, for the three attacking midfielders Mario Götze, Marius Wolf or Christian Pulisic playable by short-pass. So then missed a starting point in the penalty area, flanks were therefore almost no part of the Dortmund match.
Most recently candidates for the attack, such as Mario Mandzukic (not coming) or Divock Origi (possibly), are associated with the Dortmunders. Now the need to buy a central attacker shortly before the transfer was made clear to the club members again.
Director Hans-Joachim Watzke and advisor Matthias Sammer were sitting shoulder to shoulder in the stands in Fürth, the crucial shortage of cadre that they should hardly have escaped in the first league match of the season.
2nd follower
Although Marcel Schmelzer showed a very daring game on the left side in Fürth, the BVB lacks individual attack power on the entire positions. Both Schmelzer and his right hand, Lukasz Piszczek, have little pressure to put the defense under pressure by dribbling or running purposefully in the event of an attack.
In a team especially in the attacking area with great one-on-one players peppered – think especially of Reus, Christian Pulisic or Jaden Sancho, who prepared the 2: 1 for Dortmund beautifully – the lack of creativity of the next Defender fell clear up.
As a result, surprisingly few worked at BVB attacks on the pages, according to often the rescue was sought in the middle, which usually went wrong due to lack of space.
A transfer of another full-back is not expected. The style of Schmelzer or Piszczek should not change after all these years. However, it is quite possible that Raphael Guerreiro, who arrived late in Fürth, could offer more attack power on the left, but the Portuguese will be associated with a transfer to PSG.
3rd driver
BVB's executives had hoped for such photos because they had not invested much money for the Belgian Axel Witsel. When the World Cup star arrived in Fürth late in the second half, he took over a leading role in the center of Dortmund.
Shopping in the summer was remarkably often allusive and carving as a leader who has been around for a long time. Witsel seems to want to play the role of the driver and the spokesman in the middle – that he has saved the BVB with his goal in the fifth minute of the rest only in extra time, fits well into the picture.
But: before the Belgians came into play, they could have just recognized the problem that they did not really want to see with the Dortmunders – too much sloppiness and too little consequence the team put in an extremely threatening situation. And it did not look like there was a man who opposed it. But then Witsel came.
