More courage, repair mode and the end of sleeperfootball – how German football gets back on its feet A column by Berti Vogts.
In the past season I often went to the Bundesliga competition days with the dog instead of watching the matches. Except for Bayern and Schalke, each team remained under their potential. And when I was in the stadium in Mönchengladbach, I often went home and shook my head and thought, "I would like to relive that."
The unattractive style of many teams ensured that I could make football.
Bundesliga and national team are both on the ground
But: I am someone who can press the reset button – and that is exactly what I did. That is why I am looking forward to the Bundesliga season and also to the restart of the national team after the thrown World Championship with the game "old against new world champion" on 6 September. I am especially interested in which players can recommend themselves for the national team in the coming weeks and months and how they can shape the change.
One can say that the Bundesliga and the national team are now on the ground – and both have to rise extremely. The repair mode is announced – at all levels.
The big question: how does German football get back on its feet?
No more sleep car football
During the World Cup we saw some virtues among the Croats or Frenchmen, who actually honored German football: first of all, they pay attention to the result, they quickly come to a conclusion, they take duels and they win – and they act like a team, We have to get back these virtues.
No more sleep car football – that's the only way to go. I do not want to see balding anymore – back and forth and back. It should be fun to watch Bundesliga matches again. In my opinion, courage is a very decisive factor.
The players must once again believe in themselves, to trust attack actions.
We need courageous clubs, coaches and players
I wish courageous coaches, who let us advance from all positions. You can also happily go home after a defeat – if you lost 2: 3 or 3: 4 and just delivered a great match.
The clubs must dare to communicate and communicate more. Dortmund with the great coach Favre, Schalke with the self-confidence of last season, Hoffenheim or Leipzig: these clubs have the potential to attack Bayern sometimes – instead of throwing the gun just before the season.
Other top clubs in Europe are making themselves, but not in Bavaria
And FC Bayern too: the responsible people know what they are doing. But they also need to know that without the investments this summer they will not win the Champions League. I have a lot of respect for coach Niko Kovac – that's a great guy. But the subject of registration can not be closed seriously. Because the other top clubs in Europe continue to rest.
Only then will the Bundesliga return to the status it once held – as the most important sporting event in Europe. Currently the competition is no longer taken seriously. Or why does not one star come to Germany?
We have to look abroad
National team and Bundesliga are inevitably together and therefore further concrete action is required.
We finally have to look abroad again to learn.
After the 1998 World Cup, like many other DFB coaches, I traveled for months to watch and learn French football academies. I think that did not happen anymore. But we are back at a point where we need to learn from others to evolve.
Other sports do not sleep
The biggest problem is still trainers education. And here too we have to focus our gaze abroad. When I am in Mönchengladbach, I do not want to do my internship at Borussia or at 1. FC Köln – I have to leave there and continue my education in Spain or England. That should be mandatory.
One must not forget: the other sports do not sleep. We have last seen how great athletics is, how good the gymnasts are. The reviews speak for themselves. I hope that the footballers know what's at stake. They earn huge sums of money – so you can expect regular top performances.
