If you buy a luxury smartphone, it is unthinkable today that it cannot be charged wirelessly. For other gadgets, such as headphones, wireless charging is also becoming more common. Example.
The newest generation of iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Huawei P30 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi9. These are just a few of the newest smartphones recently introduced to the market that can be charged wirelessly. This technology extends to more and more accessoriessuch as Apple & # 39; s Airpod headphones, Samsung Galaxy Bud and other smart watches. All you need is a wireless charger with Qi support, the universal standard for wireless power transfer with low power. For the small story: Qi – pronounced "tchi" – comes from Chinese and means "breath of life" or "vital energy".
In the simplest form, the wireless Qi charger contains a charging drawer that must be connected to the electrical circuit. These devices only cost around ten euros. The IKEA furniture brand launched the idea of four years agointegrate a wireless charger in furniture and other decorative itemssuch as side tables or desk lamps. This range now has four products in Belgium. Prices range from 15 euros for a simple top-up drawer to 60 euros for the Riggad desk lamp. It should be recognized that this is practical: when you go home at night, simply place your smartphone with the backside down at the time of reloading and a few hours later your device is ready for battle.
The lucky ones don't even have to wait to be home because More and more car manufacturers are planning a place to charge the cordless telephones in the car. BMW has planned a location under the drop of storage space in the central column. The gear lever compartment is also often used as a reloading point. Two comments, however: even if wireless charging is not a decisive option when choosing your new car, check whether there is enough space. We have already come across models that are not suitable for a large smartphone, for example 6 inches (16 cm). In addition, various manufacturers have told us that the charger uses a little more Qi in the car, such as Bluetooth and WiFi. If you do not use this option, it is better to disconnect it via the on-board computer.
Although wireless charging is useful, the technology still has one major shortcoming: it takes much more time than wire charging. Although enormous progress has been made on both fronts. Consider putting the Huawei P30 Pro on the market for a month: with the SuperCharge adapter with standard wire (40 watts) the battery of 4,200 milliamps / hour can be charged to 70% in 30 minutes. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the P30 Pro loads 440% faster than the iPhone Xs Max that Apple launched last September. The P30 Pro can also be charged with the 15 Watt wireless Quick Charge. The device charges three times slower than with the SuperCharge wire adapter, but it is still 140% faster than charging an iPhone Xs Max with a cable.
The Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, a newcomer to the Belgian market, goes even further with its Mi 9. Combined with the optional charger Charge Turbo, a load of 20 watts is possible. According to the manufacturer, the 3,300 milliampere / hour battery can therefore be fully charged in 100 minutes. It takes an hour with a cable with the standard 27-watt charger. Xiaomi also offers a special car charger that can charge the device at the same speed.
There is a clear difference between the capacity of the wireless charger and the possibilities of smartphones. The cheap wireless charging cards, with a capacity of 5 or 7.5 watts, are not very fast. With the latest smartphones that support 15 or even 20 watts wireless charging, it is better to invest in a more powerful Qi charger, preferably from the same brand. This allows you to charge the phone four times faster and sometimes even faster than with a wired charger from another brand.
High-quality devices from Samsung and Huawei offer an interesting option for the concept of wireless charging. This allows users to supply power to other gadgets. At Huawei this technology is called Wireless Reverse Charge. It is particularly present on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro. Samsung has christened the Wireless PowerShare system. In short: simply place two devices behind each other and the first reload the second. This is useful if, for example, you are participating in a music festival, you need a little power for your device and another person has a charged device that is equipped with this technology.
However, reloading a second phone takes longer. We did the test from a Huawei P30 Pro to a Huawei Mate 20: in 90 minutes the battery of the second camera went from 54 to 67%, while the source phone went from 100 to 67%. The yield is therefore far from optimal, but in an emergency this can be useful. For personal use, it is more interesting to know that you can also charge other gadgets, such as a wireless headset, if they have the wireless charging option.
At the presentation of the P30 Pro, Huawei assured it was that way possible to charge mice, shavers and electric toothbrushes via the device's Wireless Reverse Charge function. And indeed, we have succeeded with our wireless electric toothbrushes. You will not be forced to take all your chargers with you on your next vacation.
No wireless charger?
Smartphones that are charged wirelessly have been in fashion for almost a year, especially in advanced models. For older and cheaper devices there is an alternative solution in the form of "wireless charging case". This is a shell for wireless charging. These shells connect via the traditional telephone charger, such as the USB-C or Lightning connector, and charge in the same way as a truly rechargeable wireless smartphone. There are covers for many phone models and some car manufacturers offer these to their customers.
