In ten years the costs of mortgages have risen faster than inflation. The costs of funerals have increased by 35% between 2007 and 2018, according to figures from the Directorate Statistics of the FPS Economy, quoted by Le Soir Monday. During the same period the cost of living increased by 23%. "The increase in funeral prices is more than half higher than inflation … Transparency on funeral fees is necessary", says federal Minister of Consumer Affairs Kris Peeters (CD & V). Johan Dexters, president of Funebra, the national federation of funeral insurance companies, says that the rates have not risen more than the index, but that the sector has demanded more services in the past ten years. Another reason to justify this inflation is the growing success of cremation, which now accounts for 60% of the funerals. The costs have more than doubled in 20 years from 200 euros in the 90s to 500 euros today. "This is due to the investments that crematoria had to make to comply with new environmental standards for smoke emissions," says Dexters. Every year 100,000 people die in Belgium, the cost of funerals usually amounts to around 5,000 euros. (Belga)
