TV series, films, books and video games that deal with artificial intelligence have always fascinated me. Will we ever be a witness of an autonomous artificial intelligence? Shall I live old enough to have the robot-like robots perform real tasks? What does our future look like? Some authors look at the problem and this is the case of the German Martin Ganteföhr through his game State of Mind. Here is my opinion about this destabilizing adventure …
It all started in 2048 in Berlin. The famous journalist Richard Nolan partially lost his memory after a taxi accident. He is looking for his wife Tracy and his son, James … From the top of his chic apartment, in this futuristic Berlin that is reminiscent of the world of Blade RunnerRichard Nolan will have to find his family and the memories he has lost …
The futuristic thriller State of Mind immerses us in a possible future, a near future in which technology has made a great miracle, but … "realistic". Here we are immersed in a universe where everything is connected, where the collection of data about our private lives is used in different ways, where technology has a big impact on our daily lives, where the idea of visionaries can influence millions of people over the whole world, where a camera always looks at us. It is clear that the bottom of all this history is reminiscent of Google, Facebook, Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, Microsoft, etc. This is why the background story of State of Mind seems so credible, effective and … scary.
Keep the surprise
At first I was planning to give you a video review of State of Mind, but at the very last moment I changed my mind. The highest quality of this game is its history. The twists and turns of the scenario, the touching scenes, shocking, even troubling on occasion, deserve that the player refrains from any visual element that can spoil the sauce. Better to dive into this state of mind with this mentality: either to jump into the void by not knowing what will happen to us and to Martin Ganteföhr and your humble editor of Game Focus.
The game is a mix of Quantic Dream style and Telltale Games (Walking Dead) games for movement and type of game mechanics (without the zombies of course), in a world of Will Smith's Blade Runner and I Robot. Certainly, this is not a game for everyone, just as Detroit Become Human could not please anyone. Here is the same kind of game (third-person view, open areas to explore, elements to work in, chat with NPCs, make answer choices), but with full camera freedom (with the right stick). During the adventure you have to make choices, participate in conversations that influence your progress. On the other hand, unlike Detroit Become Human, the tree of possibilities is not shown. Are there really many choices? Does my decision really have a big impact on the future? No idea. But certainly, some decisions were not easy to make. A few times I have put the controller aside to give me time to think. I felt there was no time limit to answer a question or to make a decision.
I tested the game on Nintendo Switch and let me tell you that the Daedalic development team is very talented. The game runs very well on Switch, the image is beautiful, as far as we like the style. The reflection of the light from the street lights on the wet sidewalk, the neon lights of the bars, the management of the shadows in the subways, the cleanliness of the image without a fart of texture, no pixel drag, in short, the very nice job. I took an impressive number of photos with my Switch, a matter of sharing the beauty of the game, but the function & # 39; & # 39; short film of 30 seconds & # 39; & # 39; was not offered at this moment, too bad.
The only thing that is a bit disconcerting or that catches the eye is the body structure of people and their extremely rigid animations. Wait until Richard Nolan walks through the eye of a security camera … Beautiful!
Sound and music
The sound atmosphere is perfect. So much on the side of robotic elements, the sound of approaching police sirens, explosions or technological gadgets of our environment. Play it with a headset, it's great. Add to those pieces that are always relevant and that support certain sequences, the immersion is total. The game is completely English spoken and subtitled in French. Given the strong presence of dialogues, the player who is less familiar with English would have to expect a lot of subtitles. The game of actors who lend their voice to the characters is reasonably credible and effective.
I completed the adventure of the State of Mind in nine hours, but by digging some more and still exploring here and there, a player can reach the 10 o'clock. Unfortunately it seems a bit short, but to artificially extend the story, we could have spoiled the sauce. I did not feel a script with shortcuts and at the same time I did not feel like I was lacking information at the end of the work. Still, fifty dollars for nine hours of play, it may seem expensive, I agree with that. Especially that there is no real replayability with State of Mind, in addition to the ability to redo the chapters of his choice and to take different decisions to discover the consequences. There are some puzzles to solve, which are always simple and easy to fill. Mainly it is to set the correct order of the images, classify information or hack a camera. On the other hand, exploring and discovering important elements is particularly exciting and exciting. Let's specify here that there is no fight in State of Mind, no bugs to fight, gun to handle, army to decimate with gun laser strokes or kinetic force to use. Here we go from point A to point B, we observe, we investigate, we interact with the environment and we are astonished.
In the last quarter of the game, it comes with gameplay novelties that have not been used before. I would have liked to see these elements being exploited more. Of course, you guessed it, I will not reveal anything to preserve the plot of the game.
I enjoyed my experience with this game, and the complex scenario scenario took me both during my games and in my head after my game sessions, the last time a game brought me so much thinking. through his sequences and his different stories tell surprises, it was with INSIDE. The richness of the experience presented by Detroit Become Human and his multiple storylines is hard to match (if not through the different productions of the studio), but the writing of State of Mind is finer. I really devoured this game from one end to the other, because we enjoy a good TV series that catches us. Maybe that was why the game seemed too short. The universe is so exciting, exciting, we want more! I want to go back to City5! Bzzzzz —– ** end of communication **
verdict: A purchase for those who like this kind of storytelling games, but the purchase will be much more recommended if a price drop occurs.
