6.28 pm – Tour of Spain: King of the mountain, Simon Yates in red

The American Ben King, who already won on Tuesday, won the 9th stage of the Tour of Spain at the top of La Covatilla (Castile and León) on Sunday, where the Briton Simon Yates has supported the red jersey for a short second. Fransen Rudy Molard.

On the eve of the first day of rest on Monday in Salamanca, King (Dimension Data) won his second mountain stage in this Vuelta: he falsified his company with his escapades and resisted the final climb to the Dutch Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), second at the end of a breathtaking chase on the slopes leading to this ski area.

King opted for the effort and took a long time to recover, wiping out the fatigue along the barriers. Then he was able to enjoy his performance: he won the first two arrivals at the height of this Vuelta!

"In the last ascent I had never suffered so much in my life, I feel like I still think it is a bit foggy," the American (29 years old) joked once.

– Yates threatened –

"Winning a podium (Tuesday) was a dream come true, I worked so hard, it was one of the big goals of my career, so it was great to be able to show that my first victory (Tuesday) came not coincidentally, "he added, saying that he wanted to take advantage of other escape opportunities for the rest of the Vuelta.

The Belgian Dylan Teuns (BMC) was third in the stage, ahead of the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana, 4th), the sharpest of the favorites.

Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), who finished ninth just under three minutes of the winner, took the red jersey for a small second at the expense of the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), while Rudy Molard, in red since Wednesday, quickly fall flag in the final climb.

The Groupama-FDJ team of Molard will be comforted with the great execution of Thibaut Pinot, who has arrived in the aftermath of the best, together with his compatriot Tony Gallopin (Ag2r-La Mondiale), sixth overall.

This is a confirmation for Simon Yates: the British had already worn the pink jersey leader of the Tour of Italy earlier this season before collapsing in the last week.

Can he keep up with the red jersey for longer? The Valverde threat, able to double it with a simple bonus, can make his chances of keeping the leader of the tunic difficult, especially since Movistar has another card to play with the Colombian Nairo Quintana, third overall 14 seconds Yates .

In the meantime, the Briton will turn red on the first rest day Monday before a tenth stage on Tuesday will be handed over a priori to the sprinters between Salamanca and Fermoselle (177 km).
