Tour of Spain – Victor Campenaerts: "I came for the victory, I am a little disappointed to be 3rd"

(Belga) Victor Campenaerts was 3rd in the 1st stage of the Tour of Spain, a time trial of eight kilometers on Saturday in Malaga. The European champion in the timed training finished 7 seconds behind the winner, the Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC), the first red jersey of the 2018 Vuelta.

"I came for the victory, I went for the red jersey, so I'm a little disappointed to finish third," Victor Campenaerts said in a video on the website of his Lotto Soudal team. "But finally, 3rd is not bad, I'm 7 seconds behind Dennis, he was clearly the best today." As with the Giro, Campenaerts is not far from the stage victory in a big tour. "I hope that in the future I can win a time trial on the World Tour", he says. "The gap is not that big, the 16th stage of the Vuelta will be a time trial again, we'll see what happens". Campenaerts does not only think about times. "There are still some good stages, we have a great team that can ride in an attractive way and I hope to be able to attack in the next stages". (Belga)
