The segment of luxury compact SUVs is well represented in the Brazilian market. Between the alternatives we have recently released BMW X2, Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40, with mention of it.
Soon, however, a new heavyweight contender will join the group: the Lexus UX, which was presented this month at a global event in Sweden, and is expected to arrive in Brazil early next year – particularly at the end of the first quarter.
Japanese in a segment dominated by Europeans, the UX comes with a differentiated appearance and a proposal of predominantly urban use. The name UX, originating from Urban Crossover, is very revealing in that sense.
The UX has a high position and large wheels (17 or 18 inches, depending on the version) like all SUVs, but the behavior is automotive, thanks to the calibrated steering and suspension systems for asphalt. This does not mean that UX can not drive on a dirt road.
When it is needed, every car does this. But UX is not a vehicle for off-road driving.
The UX was presented in three mechanical configurations: 2.0-liter petrol engine and 2.0 hybrid (petrol and electric), both 4 × 2 (front), and 2.0 × 4 × 4 hybrid (with two electric motors, one for each axle).
We evaluated the hybrid version 4 × 2, which is the only one offered in Brazil, and we love what we saw. With 178 hp under the bonnet, the UX 250h was agile in traffic and on the road. According to the factory, it accelerates from 0 to 100 in 9 seconds.
For this the engine has the contribution of the new CVT-type gearbox with the first gear-driven gearbox that guarantees more starting tools, such as in a conventional automatic gearbox.
The steering, although light, seemed accurate and fast. And the suspension, soft on the vertical axis, kept the lateral and longitudinal movements of the body with ability.
The driver's position enjoyed the good visibility offered by the panel installed under the driver's line of sight and the narrow front speakers. In addition, the seats support the body well and most controls are easily accessible.
There are only two points that can be improved. One is the location of the traction control adjustment buttons and the driving modes (Sport, Sport Plus, Normal and Eco), located on the side of the instrument panel, away from the driver. Another is the rear space for the rear passengers' legs that can be wider.
In addition, the UX is a well-equipped car with multimedia center, hi-fi sound system, dual zone air conditioning, head-up display, electric rear door, electronic stability program and active assistant in curves, among other resources.
The factory still does not speak in the price range, but it is certain that it will be under the NX 300h, offered by RS 229.670, which also just arrived in a new updated version on the Brazilian market. The value is expected to approach R $ 200,000.
