Ahead of Waze since 2009, the Noam Bardim of Israel has a clear goal: stopping traffic in big cities. However, he recently realized that people are helping to find shortcuts using GPS and that the Internet would not be enough. It was necessary to change the way people move through the big cities – perhaps an old habit: lifts. On Wednesday 22, the company starts running in Brazil with the Waze Carpool, a service that tries to unite drivers and passengers with technology.
"We have to drive a car because that is the only way to solve the problem of mobility, even if we have autonomous cars, if there is one person per car, we have the same traffic as today," says he. Bardim was in Brazil to launch the service and spoke with the state about the difficulties to do this – "there is a challenge of density," he says. He also talked about plans for the start of the service here and what he hopes to see when Carpool becomes a success. The following are the main extracts from the interview.
Status: Waze Carpool tries to combine drivers and passengers. How to do this?
Noam Bardim: We have a density problem: we need users who live nearby, need travel at similar times and have similar destinations. With technology we have been able to refer this data to the user. Today we already have the driver & # 39; s, which is an advantage. And much more: who drives, does not have to wait for a passenger, but just walks away. If someone shows up, this is an advantage. We want to benefit from resources that already exist, but are underused.
Is Carpool like Uber?
We are not Uber. Carona is voluntary. The money that the driver earns on the application must help you with petrol. It should be a fun experience for everyone, so we advise you to walk in front. I know it will vary depending on your place of residence. If you live 100 meters from a train station, you walk. If you live a mile away, you can walk or make a lift. Let's learn how people will use the service in every neighborhood.
In Brazil, people leave the car at home, thanks to Uber, but use them as a service. How to persuade them to change before the ride?
When we started with Waze and said that people would use the mobile phone to move around, they called us crazy. It worked: 100 million people now use Waze. Changing is difficult, but we think the same with Carpool. We have to drive because that is the only way to solve the problem of mobility. Even if we have autonomous cars, if there is one person per car, we have the same traffic as today. Already with the ride even those who are not in the system will benefit, because there will be fewer cars on the street.
Why make a national launch?
We have to test. I think Carpool will be great in São Paulo and Rio, but in the beginning it may not work. Maybe Fortaleza works better. We know we are disappointing some people: sometimes it will be difficult to find drivers or passengers, especially in the beginning. But it will be the users who can tell us how the service can work. And let us learn from this.
Other startups have similar services. As Mr. do you see the competition?
We were happy with the competition. At the end of the day our biggest competitor is not another company, but the empty seat in every car in a traffic jam, the car that only has one person.
If we meet in a year, how will we know if Waze Carpool is a success?
I hope that we will hold an event in São Paulo at 9:00 am and will not see any traffic congestion in the city. I hope it will be a year, but maybe it's a bit more, but that's how we measure our success: as the streets become empty. We work together with governments and the private sector, because everyone wins when that happens. It is not just traffic: it is pollution, it is the cost of finding a place to park, it is time people lose to escape traffic. We want to give people more time.
