The effect of stress on the skin

We start to blush just for fear of blushing

Joy, sorrow, grief, anger – our skin responds to every event that marks our lives. Which skin problems can be prevented by reducing stress in life?

The skin is the largest organ of our body, a real conductor between him and the outside world. It is like an antenna, it transmits all signals coming from within, and it radiates honestly. They catch you in an uncomfortable situation – your ears burn. Your head gives compliments, your cheeks are glowing.

The skin has many functions that we sometimes do not even guess – it prevents infections and dangerous pathogens; prevents overheating, hypothermia, dehydration; changes the body temperature; removes toxins; absorbs light and turns it into heat.

The skin does everything to protect us from the outside world – it reacts sharply, cold, wet and dry, hard and soft. And always signaled.

The skin and the nervous system – like twins

Scientists have discovered that all processes in the body are controlled by the nervous system. And with the skin has a very close bond – in some ways it are twin brothers. During the embryonic development of all parts of the nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, as well as the epidermis, originate from the ectoderm – the embryonic outer embryo. And this fact makes their relationship inseparable, they constantly exchange messages.

Thick skin, redness – they are the result of processes that are controlled by the nervous system. Shocks and irritation are a reaction of the hormonal system, the hormone cortisol that is produced under stress.

We start to blush just for fear of blushing

The study of this complex question is the science of psycho-dermatology – a science in which psychiatry and dermatology intersect. She studies the connection between skin and mental illness that develops simultaneously with one person. In many observations scientists have discovered how stress affects the skin negatively:

– When stress reduces the protective function of the skin

– Stress can be an incentive to break down skin pigmentation

– Stress suppresses the formation of skin lipids, affecting the protective function

But this is not a complete list of the effects of stress on the skin.

Change the color of the face

Stress is a fairly extensive concept. It includes emotional stress and negative environmental effects, large amounts of alcohol, steroids and even abuse of fitness – all of this affects the skin of the face and its color. During such situations the blood vessels and capillaries become smaller because of the stress hormones, the entire blood, nutrients and minerals are interrupted. The blood of the face "retreats" and it becomes pale and with circles under the eyes.

If you think that the appearance of the face only comes from the love of salt and the abuse of liquids at night – then you are wrong. Another reason is stress. When an important situation is not resolved and stress becomes "chronic", everything seems sad. Add a lack of sleep in addition to bags, a bad mood and the result is clear – the skin shows clear signs of premature aging.

Loss of tone

You have certainly noticed that in days that are nothing, we do not look the way we want. The skin looks less elastic, the glare in the eyes disappears. Nothing surprising. During stress, the adrenal glands release stress hormones: epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol. On the one hand, they increase blood pressure and blood sugar levels to have enough energy, but on the other hand, such a disturbance of the microcirculation affects the skin. It becomes loose because the fibers of the connective tissue are not ready to contract with the usual intensity. The wrinkles begin to form under the influence of these processes and the oval of the face loses its normal contours.

Unpleasant blush

One can develop a mental illness – erythophobic anxiety, we start to blush out of fear of blushing. People with this phobia feel terribly unhappy and ill. At such moments they sweat, feel weak. Scientists know the cause of this condition – there is a lot of cortisol and inflammatory neurotransmitters in the blood, which are similar in an infectious disease.

Sensitivity of the skin

Another inconvenience of stress is increased sensitivity and dryness of the skin. This problem is quite large, but once the unpleasant factors that trigger this sensitivity disappear – the skin normalizes.

Cosmetic procedures and stress

Many women under the influence of stress decide to radically change their lives and, for example, make the first serious cosmetic procedure. Be careful, do not rush! It is known that stress suppresses the process of cell regeneration and weakens the immune system. The healing process slows down and unwanted consequences can develop. It is best to pay attention to the procedures associated with pleasant tactile sensations, such as massage in any form: face, face, general.
