Former NFL player Vontaze Burfict, a linebacker who received the most severe sentence in league history for a foul on the field in 2019, was arrested in Las Vegas on Saturday, according to court records.

According to online records from the Las Vegas Justice Court, Burfict has been arrested on battery charge. There was no lawyer for Burfict in the archives to comment on the accusation on his behalf.

Burfict, 30, was released on his own initiative, according to court records.

Police did not immediately answer a call from The Associated Press, and the circumstances of Burfict’s arrest were not immediately available.

Burfict played for the Oakland Raiders when the NFL suspended him on September 30, 2019 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Indianapolis Colts’ tight-fitting Jack Doyle.

The league cited “repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules” by Burfict, and his appeal against the suspension was dismissed.

It was the third time Burfict had been banned for a dangerous hit on the field, along with several others leading to fines.

Burfict played parts of eight NFL seasons, seven of them with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals released Burfict in March 2019.

Born in Los Angeles, Burfict attended Arizona State University.
