If you test a pick-up truck, take it to a busy parking lot – unless you're never planning to drive it anywhere, but cow pastures and creek beds.

Parking some of today's full-size pickups on a busy parking lot is like trying to slip a riverboat into a pool in the backyard; that is, it is almost impossible.

Last week we happened to be testing two pickups, a large monster that was as big as an Abrams tank; and the current tester, the medium-sized GMC Canyon, that was infinitely better manageable in tight spaces.

In the daily driving of Chattanooga the Canyon was clearly the most practical vehicle. Abundantly powerful to pull our steep grades, it was also no job to park the center. In addition, it screwed the construction bottlenecks of Highway 127 with scissors.

WHAT IS IT?

The mid-sized GMC Canyon is a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Colorado pickup and competes in the same class with the Toyota Tacoma. Our Denali trimtesttruck is configured with a crew cabin and a short bed, making it a good SUV alternative. A crew cabin with a long bed is available if you need more towing capacity. Either way, it will draw about 7,000 pounds with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine.

HOW MUCH?

Like all truck lines, the gap between the lowest-priced working version and the top model with luxury equipment is enormous. Our GMC Canyon Crew Denali tester, which includes upgrades such as heated leather seats, navigation and extra help from chrome parts, gives a $ 45,935 enumeration. Meanwhile a stripped Canyon SL starts at $ 22,095, less than half the price of the Denali.

WHAT WE LOVED

The silent motor, ventilated and heated seats, compact steering wheel, safe operation, corner step rear bumper and Bose stereo.

SPACE FOR IMPROVEMENT

No surveillance system for blind spots, pinched vision to the rear and a wobbling contact switch.

GOOD FOR CHATTANOOGA BECAUSE

We are a sort of city of a pick-up truck and this model should keep its value spectacularly well. These Denali badges will also impress the neighbors.

IMPRESSIONS DRIVE

The 306 hp engine provides surprisingly fast launches. Taking turns is safe and the suspension absorbs road imperfections. Visibility is generally good, with the exception of the rear window, which is somewhat blocked by head restraints and hardware in connection with the sliding window.

SOIL LINE

If your draft needs are limited to kitchen appliances and occasionally a load of mulch, the Canyon must be a choice to find. If you can not afford the Denali version, there are also several less expensive equipment levels available. A diesel version is also available if you need more low-end torque.
