He has been practicing as a plastic surgeon for more than 30 years and currently works for the Queen Catalina Foundation, which intervenes in patients with congenital abnormalities.
As a meditative, the plastic surgeon Ricardo Manzur focuses his eyes on a fixed point and then smiles in the middle of an interview that evokes memory that enables him to keep in mind why he decided to train professionally in medicine and later on specialized and promoted. in plastic surgery.
He mentions that as a child he had the desire to know in depth what science is that studies the life and health of people. Later, after acquiring certain intellectual maturity, he chose the specialization and the doctorate in his name, because, in his opinion, this was "a part of the surgery through which he could carry out procedures that would allow an improvement of the facial appearance. the body of people. "
His first steps were at the age of 25, when he was appointed head of the Antonio Pedro University Hospital. There he was responsible for 120 residents and, in addition to extensive experience in surgery, gained the importance of respect for their peers, provided good care to patients and understood that the academic and scientific part is very important in their office.
In the present, Manzur has more than 30 years experience as a plastic surgeon, the time in which he was able to create the Ricardo Manzur Institute in 1984, where he performed his first aesthetic operations. He then assured that he pointed to the process of formation of the first cosmetologists of the Caribbean and then in 1985 he published the book Cosmetological management of the pre- and postoperative in aesthetic surgery.
He emphasizes that he also succeeded in publishing three editions of the magazine New Era, which contained articles from the field of Plastic Surgery, and later made other publications of texts in various books and magazines.
From his point of view, he believes that in the area of plastic surgery the subject of patient safety is of great importance, which he believes is right in his profession, because it enables the experts to achieve satisfactory results in patients.
"It is important to have safety and to manage sanitation at the place where the surgical procedures are carried out, which must be regulated by the Ministry of Health and controlled by audits led by the departmental or district health secretariat. It is vitally important that we have the right tools and especially that the patient decides on a process, informs and looks for a professional with knowledge, experience and who succeeds in having empathy. "
It is worth mentioning that he is currently head of plastic surgery at Reina Catalina Clinic and Simón Bolívar University; In addition, he is the founder of the Queen Catalina Foundation, where he works together with other colleagues on patients with low incomes with congenital abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate, among others.
Although he has experienced countless anecdotes with patients and devoted much of his time to his work, he reveals that at a certain stage of his life his profession could not separate him from his family, so that at some point he had to mediate for a specific situation next to his daughter.
Manzur ensures that his work gives him the satisfaction of helping others.
"My daughter, at the age of 22, wanted to do a series of plastic operations, using the fact that I was a plastic surgeon, so I had to guide her more than a surgeon, like a father." At that moment I realized that his desire was driven by a number of friends, so from there I have corrected that many people choose to have these procedures influenced by the environment and not by their own desire, which is worrying.
Rescued that, undoubtedly, in the performance of his function what must always prevail is professional ethics, so it is important to him that whatever surgical method the patient chooses this must be done by an accredited expert, with qualifications in plastic surgery and with an experience that can be proven.
Finally, Manzur clarifies that "the patient must keep in mind that in case of surgery, events may have gotten out of hand and have nothing to do with the plastic surgeon's ability as infections, in addition to other complications."
