Ciudad Juárez- Melissa Alejandra Magallanes García traveled a little more than a hundred kilometers from the community of Puerto Palomas to Ciudad Juarez yesterday to find out what she should have done to prevent cervical cancer.
"I would have liked to know how to avoid it," says the 27-year-old woman. "I have family members who have died because they have not been treated."
Melissa Alejandra has been aware of her illness for almost two years and decided to become a health promoter.
Like her, more than 200 women attended a speech yesterday to spread the message in their social circles that cervical cancer can be prevented and cured.
Last year 57 women died in Ciudad Juárez for not treating this condition, they provide data from the Epidemiological and Statistical Sub-System of Deaths (SEED).
That amount represents 40 percent of the 140 deaths recorded by the state during the same period, according to official figures.
With a speech from specialists in cancer control, women try to take leadership in health issues.
Arturo Valenzuela Zorrilla, medical director of the Minister of Health in the northern zone, said that one of the main problems that prevent cessation of deaths from cervical cancer is the lack of detection.
Although it is technically easy, finding this cancer is a complicated task because women do not go to health centers.
"Last year, women died who should not have died because it takes about 20 years for cervical cancer to develop due to an infection," said Valenzuela Zorrilla.
Smoking and contracting the human papillomavirus (HPV) are factors that increase the chance of developing the pathology later.
"We need family leaders," he said. "It is necessary to develop a health leadership strategy in the family and increase awareness." Create a health project to save lives. "
These activities are being developed in the context of the uterus crisis for cervical cancer. The campaign tries to attract the attention of women to interest them in practicing the smear.[email protected]
