Large cargo ships disappear from the Czech Republic and the poor river infrastructure can be too dry

The shipbuilding industry still does not end in the Czech Republic, but new ships, for example from Kresice or Lovosice, only go abroad, especially to the Netherlands.

Prague – Freight transport in the Czech Republic is gradually disappearing. The number of motorboats has dropped by more than half in the last 15 years to the current 33. Trailers and other freighters have also shrunk, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transport.

Passenger ships and small ships are increasing. According to the shipowners, the cause of the loss of large cargo vessels is a long-term drought and also inadequate infrastructure on the Czech rivers.

Of crucial importance in their eyes is the lack of navigation platforms in Děčín and Přelouč. They have been talking about their construction for years, but the preparation of both buildings has problems with the environmental effects. Both buildings have achieved an accepted amendment to the law, which should accelerate the construction of transport, energy and communication infrastructure.

According to the Vice-President of the Transport Union, Miloslav Černý, the Low Carrier of the Rivers traces a layer of freight, according to him, in the 1990s, nearly five million tons of material were transported to the Elbe while they are currently hundreds of thousands.

New ships go abroad

The Czech Republic has lost much of its special fleet fleet. The ships have been sold or scrapped abroad, or some of the shipowners have moved abroad, according to the chairman of the military race-water department.

The decline in shipping is also registered with the largest domestic shipyards, which have fewer orders because domestic ship owners do not need new vessels. According to Raby, the last cargo motor boat for a Czech cruise was produced around 1993.

According to Raby, an inadequate infrastructure makes these orders difficult, because shipping problems arise. "Foreign buyers have to wait, which they obviously do not like," he added.

Smaller domestic yards mainly save repairs or maintenance. Part of the traffic is even closed, from the largest, for example, the Mělník shipyard or Libni in Prague.

In recent years, recreational traffic has increased on inland rivers, reflected in the number of passenger ships designed to carry more than 12 passengers. In the Czech Republic there are currently 84, compared with 2010 with 27% more. The reason is mainly interest in cruises. There are also small ships with a hull length of 20 meters and a maximum capacity of 12 people. There are more than 15,000 in the Czech Republic.

There have been several projects in the past to revitalize shipping. In addition to the construction of the navigation phases and rooms on the Elbe and the Vltava River, it is also the waterway of the Danube-Odra-Elbe. The basic option, according to a study by the Ministry of Transport, amounted to approximately 610 billion crowns. The project, however, has a number of opponents, according to which it would be an inefficient investment, on the contrary, its promoter is President Milos Zeman.
