When Eminem is surprised Kamikaze album arrived Thursday at midnight, one name jumped in the credits: Illadaproducer is credited with production on four tracks, more than anyone else than Eminem himself. The beatmaker, real name Illya Fraser, is partially responsible for three of the first four songs, and his fights help to set the fierce tone of the album. On the first track alone, Eminem states that every rapper is "a goner" except Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Big Sean; defies the New York radio personality Charlamagne tha God; makes jokes about Lil Pump, Lil Xan and Lil Yachty; and even decides that even his own anti-Trump code might not have been worth it last fall.
Illadaproducer, who collaborates with Kent Jones and has produced songs for Lil Pump, see Kamikaze as Eminem & # 39; s return to the vicious disrespectful days of The Slim Shady LP, in contrast to the more contemplative tone of 2017 revival. The producer spoke with Rolling stone about the importance of listening to your fans, sampling Little Dragon and why young rappers should not let themselves be offended by Eminem's dissent.
How did you meet Eminem for the first time?
I did this song "Wait a Minute" for this artist Phresher from Brooklyn. I lived in Brooklyn for a while when I was younger, so everyone from Brooklyn that I always try to work with. Immediately I gave him that record and it went for us. That was one of Eminem's favorite songs last year. He said, "Who did that?" Fresher said, "My husband Illa." From there are Paul Rosenberg and Tracy [McNew] from Shady Records reached me. We have worked since then.
I was on the road, because I also manage DJ Khaled's artist Kent Jones. So I went on tour to do things for different projects. I just fed them.
Did you know that you fed them beats for specific projects?
In front of revival, I knew [Eminem] was fucking with my beats, the energy of my music. So I sent him beats with those hard-hitting 808s and that turn-up energy. So he ended up in the record "Offended" and that was one of the striking records Revival.
I saw after he the song & # 39; Chloraseptic & # 39; had done – oh, he is ready to get angry. People spoke that mess on that internet. So I have something like that, I have some mess, if he wants to get bad, here it is. He continued to feed him, continued to feed him. And he kept going bad on my beats. Shout out to Tracy from Shady Records. I sent her some music like, Eminem just killed the "Chloraseptic" remix. That is what he needs to keep doing. Here is some music for him. She says, "He has to hear this."
A few months passed and she beat me out of nowhere: "Are these beats available?" I have something like, oh shit! At first it was two beats, then I sent another batch and he chose two more. By that time I was about to faint. But I did not know that he would use all four. I have a lot of beats on many projects. People choose things. Sometimes someone will make it; sometimes no one will save it. So I just kept it top secret. I did not tell anyone.
Then I sat there last night, playing video games at the cradle, taking a break in making beats. I walk behind my house, I see something, Eminem dropped a new song. I thought it was the Venus record. So I have something like that, let me see this. I clicked, I see the link on iTunes, it's the whole album! I almost dropped my phone, man. I lost it. I clicked on the first song, it was my beat! Oh no, no! I try to smoke outside a joint. I could not even get high. I played number one to five, I produced the majority of them! And one of them is a sketch!
Have you not had heads-up?
Two weeks ago I got some information from my lawyer, so I knew he was going to use it. But usually he falls in December. So I have, okay, I have a few months to wait. Hopefully he will drop this year. If not, I will have to wait until September. Because Em is not in a hurry. But that shit came out two weeks later.
Eminem speaks to the critics revival much on this album – did you notice the negative reaction to that album?
Oh yeah. I am someone who is always online. I am proud of that. I read every review. Because I am part of this project, and Eminem is one of the biggest! The problem is, Em also reads all that shit. That ruined him. So he went back inside, and that's why eight months later, nine months later Kamikaze.
Which two beats were the first ones you sent out?
The one he used for the intro and the beat for the first half of & # 39; Normal & # 39 ;.
How did the Ringer & # 39; together?
I tried to make something for the club. Something for Migos, Pump or SmokePurpp. When they said they were fucking with my music from & # 39; Wait a minute, I sent him a bunch of beats that all seemed to be "Wait". He did not choose any. So I have something like that, he wants something else. I sent him a new batch with a lot of different sounds: Atlantic sounding shit, Miami-sounding shit, up-north-sounding shit, West Coast shit. He chose that battle.
You also work with young rappers, and on this album Eminem goes after the young guys – has that put you in a funny place?
No man. For me it is art. They make two different types of hip-hop. There is lyrical hip hop, which was always supreme. Then there is what they call mutter rap, that is feel good music. It is more about feeling than about the text. They can coincide. If I hear him go to the younger boys, I think this is the game you are in. If you say you're a rapper, if another rapper comes to you, even if it's the GOAT, go take some bars, or you'll give something back. Most of them just take it. Because there is nothing that you can do. What are you going to do, fight against rap Eminem? Nah. They do their own thing. Eminem just turned off the switch on Niggas and handed out a whooping cough. Like, do not think I was not paying attention.
Do you think they are listening?
Some cats will be like that, fuck that. But look at Lil Yachty: he thought, "yo, I do not take that as a diss. I love Eminem." I even think Pump will not even take it as a diss-on. For me, Eminem talks about how everyone is a copy of everyone. Pump is one of the creators, so if I am him, I do not take that as a diss.
Do ghostwriters bother you?
I can not get angry; it is about making a hit record. But you have to respect the greats who do not need a ghostwriter.
How & # 39; Normal & # 39; together?
Normally a beat that I made last year for a Kendrick or a J. Cole or a Drake. While I'm making it, I feel that someone is playing truant on this shit.
In the beginning, however, Eminem sings as some of the young artists do.
Yes, it is reminiscent of a Post Malone, mixed with Chance-like things – do you know how to make that song flow on some of their records? I was excited when I heard all the streams, all the melodies he came with, because as I said, he is watching. As a great artist or artist who is just starting out, you must pay attention to your fans. If people tell you, yo, we like this but not this, they are not your boss, these are the people you need to please. You should stick to it, just do it your way. That is what I think he did perfectly on this album.
The example on "Normal" – that's Little Dragon?
Little dragon, man! I love indie music. I love diggin & # 39; for monsters. I do not really taste anymore, because of publishing. But if I hear a sample that just lets me hear the whole beat, I can not ignore it. I have to get started, write the music very quickly. Then I will deal with the company later.
How about "Lucky You," what led to that beat?
That was the last count I sent. I sat down, I was on my way. I had something like that, I'm going to make beats only for Em. Because Tracy said something like that: "He likes these two beats, so if you have anything else, send me a little more." So I sat all week and made beats especially for him. I have something like Eminem is always so bad on those big piano melody records. Many of his major records have guitar or piano. I have to make one of them. That is why I went with the big piano line.
What about "Good Guy," what is the monster there?
I do that with my video game. Kingdom Hearts. It is a Japanese video game, and that is the theme song of it. It is one of the most dopest melodies I have ever heard. Shout Japanese video games and Japanimation for inspiration. Filtered, some pork chops done, some processing done. I basically made it unrecognizable, but I know they would still have found it. That is why we were dealing with the approval. But when I do something, I try to make it where it is not fully recognizable.
Did they add Jessie Reyez later?
Yep. She killed that record. The plate "Nice Guy" too. She is special.
In mind, how are you? Kamikaze stack next to revival?
You can not even compare the two. Apples and oranges. Many of Em & # 39; s more sophisticated fans, people who wanted to see growth in them, they liked revival. I liked it revival to. People wanted Slim Shady. He did his version of [Jay-Z’s] 04:44. People were not ready for it. It is the market; it is not the music. But you will not know until you try, right? He tried it. He got his reaction. Then immediately, he goes straight back to the drawing board. O.K., is that what you want? And he delivered.
So this is the return of Slim Shady?
That's it for me. Immediately he just comes out bad, spittin & # 39 ;. This is Eminem! Top five, dead or alive. I want to hear him get bad. And I got what I was looking for.
