Fall Arts Calendar 2018-2019 | Hampton Roads full of attractions Art and theater

Classical music

Season after season, the Hampton Roads classic music scene offers a first-class mix of traditional favorites and contemporary surprises. From works made hundreds of years ago to world premieres fresh from the page, the programming mix offers something for everyone.

The Virginia Symphony series of this season takes on a new urgency with the announcement that JoAnn Falletta, the music director of the orchestra, will get off in 2020. Falletta has programmed many of her favorite and inspiring works this season, including the Mahler Second Symphony, which is closing the performance year. More changes can be expected with the arrival of Gonzalo Farias, the talented new assistant conductor of the symphony.

As in previous seasons, Virginia Opera will open with a new work for Hampton Roads. The & # 39; Street Scene & # 39; Kurt Weill is weighed against three popular operas from the past. The coming year also includes winning programming from Virginia Chorale, Norfolk Chamber Consort and Symphonicity.

Theater

Where can you get the best value for your money during the upcoming theater season?

Virginia Stage Company & # 39; s Monthly Children & # 39; s Play Saturday! – priced for $ 5 – maybe the ticket.

Each month, VSC offers two versions of a child-friendly game performed by the Children's Theater of Hampton Roads in the renovated Wells Education Space in Norfolk. CTHR also organizes each piece in the Zeiders American Dream Theater at Virginia Beach, with tickets for $ 10. You can find the seasonal schedule at the bottom of this calendar.

It is important to make work for the next generation of theater visitors. At one time years ago, VSC faced extinction. Evidence can be found in my collection of ephemera, including a few Virginia Stage Company posters. One is a romantic print of Juliet who will soon appear in her newly departed Romeo. It says: "She dies for the real time", before explaining that unless VSC has gathered enough subscribers, it was forever for the regional theater company.

It has survived and is ready to open for its 40th season.

Visual Arts

The Tidewater art scene will be considerably richer when the Barry Art Museum is opened at Old Dominion University in November.

The two-story, 24,000-square-meter museum on the corner of Hampton Boulevard and 43rd Street is the result of the largest gift the university has ever received – $ 35 million from Carolyn and Richard Barry.

The museum will house over 300 works of art, and the opening exhibition will include art from the Barrys collection, including international glass sculpture, modern American 20th century paintings and historic fashion dolls.

In July, a 600 pound gold glass chandelier was installed by the internationally renowned artist Dale Chihuly. It is accompanied by three other works by the artist and glass sculptures by other acclaimed artists including Ginny Ruffner and Stanislav Libensky.
