Nintendo has lowered the sales forecast for its game console Switch despite a really strong Christmas business.
The Japanese game specialist sold around 9.4 million switch devices in the past quarter. But the original goal of selling 20 million consoles at the end of March was no longer feasible: after nine months, Nintendo is only 14.5 million. The forecast has now been reduced to 17 million devices. Yet Nintendo in competition with Sony's Playstation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One is still very good.
The good switch demand caused a profit of 104.9 billion yen (840 million euros) in the cash register in the Christmas quarter, almost a quarter more than a year ago. Turnover grew by 26 percent to 608.4 billion yen (approximately 4.88 billion euros).
The failure of the previous console "Wii U" had previously temporarily drowned the company in red and a crisis. With the switch, which can be used both at home on TV and on the go, the traditional company succeeded again, but a hit. Since the market introduction in March 2017, approximately 32.3 units have been sold.
Nintendo also released the release of the first "Mario Kart" smartphone game for the summer on Thursday – it should start until the end of March. The company had long held on to make its popular game characters available only on their own devices. But with the rise of smartphone games that slow down the sale of the internal 3DS mobile console, Nintendo turned around. There is already a "Super Mario" game for the smartphone. Meanwhile, sales of 3DS consoles fell from nearly 5.9 to 2.3 million devices in the first nine months of the fiscal year. / So / DP / mis
