ANDM apparently wants a complete break from the past; plans to change the name and logo
The central committee of Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) discusses a number of issues along the lines of rebranding itself and reforming its political ideology, according to a report from the regional state media – mass media agency Ahmara.
Migbaru Kebede, who is a member of the central committee of ANDM and the national political organizing head of the party, says that the party will discuss in depth the drafting of a political agenda that will be presented at the next 12th Congress of the party.
Evaluation of the changes in the last three years after the 11th conference is part of the agenda to be drawn up.
The party has also announced that it intends to change its name and to change the party's logo. If this happens, this will be the second time in the history of the party. Before adopting his current name after the overthrow of Colonel Mengistu's regime, ANDM was known as the Ethiopian People Democratic Movement (EPDM).
When the late Meles Zenawi formed the current ruling party in such a way that it was a coalition of four ethnically based parties, EPDM was forced to change itself to ANDM. And some say that even the name was imposed on it.
The reason it gives itself a new name this time is apparently because of public opinion, because it is believed that the name and party emblem does not represent Amhara people. The question is that this has always been the case in the last 27 years; why now?
Perhaps the party is exploiting the revolutionary fervor among its members to change itself or does it intend to do so now to indicate that it is no longer under the control of the TPLF, or it is a sign that the party is now competing? of newly formed parties who claim to have a wider acceptance among ethnic-Amhara.
ANDM also thinks about whether or not to reform the ideology of "revolutionary democracy".
Regulations and rules that are assumed to be outdated (they are not mentioned) must also be changed, according to the AMMA report.
ANDM is not the only member of the ruling coalition to make a reconsideration of ideology and rebranding. Oromo People & # 39; s Democratic Organization (OPDO) has announced its intention to do the same thing about two weeks ago.
