Almost 23 cities in the country receive modern solid waste management systems after $ 445 million in financial support from the World Bank Group.
The capital takes the largest part of the financing by 225 million dollars. The rest will be invested in other large and medium-sized cities across the country.
It is common to see heaps of solid waste in the main cities of the country, where the stench of the waste exposes residents to various respiratory and related diseases, according to Negash Wegesho, secretary of state for water and sanitation at the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and electricity.
"Solid waste is also the cause of flooding in cities," says Negash.
