Ethiopia's new cabinet 50 percent women, including defense

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – The new cabinet of Ethiopia is now a record of 50 percent female, including a women's defense minister, after the legislators unanimously approved the nominations of the reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

A woman also leads the newly formed Ministry of Peace.

Abiy said Tuesday as he presented his nominations that "our female ministers will refute the old adage that women can not lead."

Former house presenter Muferiat Kamil will lead the Ministry of Peace at a time when Africa's second most populous country is sometimes confronted with violent ethnic tensions amid drastic political and economic reforms.

Aisha Mohammed Musa will lead the Ministry of Defense.

This 20-person cabinet is the second that has been mentioned since Abiy took office in April. The first was criticized because of the low number of female ministers.
