August 27, 2018 – The Ethiopian government has terminated the Ethiopian military-affiliated Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project due to numerous delays in completing the project.
During the first press conference he held since he was elected Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed complained about the delay that METEC had caused to the project, as a result of which Salini Impregilo, the project's main contractor, required additional compensation for the delays.
METEC was the contractor for the electromechanical and hydraulic steel structures of the project. The Prime Minister said that Salini Impregilo had completed the end of the project on time, METEC did not.
Dr. said during the weekend. Abiy that the government had canceled the contract with METEC and would award it to another company.
The 6000-megawatt dam project would be 60 percent complete, but far behind the first project estimates. "It is a project that should be completed within five years, but seven or eight years later, no turbine is operational," Abiy said during a press conference in Addis Ababa on Saturday.
According to a VOA report, a METEC official who did not want to be mentioned said that the company first heard of the cancellation on Saturday. "Even now our employees are on the site," said the official.
