The fire broke out around midnight on the 4th floor of a building on the rue Acchiardi-de Saint-Léger 8 in the Saint Roch district of Nice.

The fire started from an apartment that was occupied by a 61-year-old woman. The latter was trapped by the flames on her balcony, where she is tragically deceaseded. The 23 residents of the building were evacuated and housed in the gymnasium of the Salle Leyrit, close to their home.

More than 80 firefighters were mobilized; they had 7 fire hoses. It took them more than 3 hours to extinguish the fire. The victim's apartment was "very busy" according to firefighters.

That night the subprefect, Gwenaëlle Chapuis, told our colleagues in Nice-Matin: "the national police were forced to intervene with the use of tear gas to disperse an abuse and arrests."

This morning the residents have still not returned home. At the moment there is a concrete engineer present to check the structure of the building, because the authorities fear that the power of the fire has affected the concrete. It will be necessary to wait for its conclusions before making a decision.
