"Record" of bear attacks in Ariège, denounces the farmers' confederation

On a Monday, the Confédération paysanne regretted a "record" number of bear attacks on herds in Ariège and condemned in a statement the "politics of the ostrich", while the introduction of two bears in the Pyrenees was desired by the government.

"The summer season 2018 is again characterized by an increase in bear attacks on herds in Ariege, with attacks that have more than doubled since 2016," said the farmers' union in a statement.

A concentration of attacks "unsustainable". "This year more than 230 attacks have been reported since August 20, 2018, with more than 372 victims (not counting the missing numbers for the only department of Ariège," said the union, which emphasizes a concentration of attacks "unsustainable" in the Couserans region, in the western part of the department.

In the period from 1 January to 20 August the number of 232 attacks is indeed a record in recent years, 2016 was marked by 96 attacks in the same period and 2017 by 166 attacks but more than 500 victims, according to a document from the prefecture of Ariège from Monday.

The union calls for "clear goals to defend pastoralism". "The ostrich's policy on the ariégeoise situation can not continue! The plan is 2018-2028, built without consultation, and the cessation of breeders and herders in Ariège is unacceptable to us," says the Confédération paysanne.

The union argues for "clear objectives in defense of nomadism", which according to the trade union has not allowed the public consultation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. For example, the Confédération paysanne pleads for the establishment of a non-lethal trapping unit and the frightening of bears.

A clear majority of approximately 6,000 French Internet users who were consulted in July said they were in favor of the next introduction of two polar bears in the Pyrenees that Nicolas Hulot wanted, including among the inhabitants of the six sections of the massif.

According to the results, published on 23 August, of a public consultation organized from 25 June to 25 July by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques prefecture and the Occitanie region, 8.9% of the participants only gave an unfavorable opinion on this introduction, against 88, 9% favorable, the rest of the votes are neutral or invalid.
