Corona in Germany: more than a million infections

The number of corona cases in Germany has passed the one million mark. Although the number of registered new infections remains relatively stable, the Robert Koch Institute reports a new number of deaths.

In Germany, the number of new corona infections discovered so far has exceeded one million. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), health authorities reported 22,806 new infections within one day – a decrease of 842 cases compared to Friday a week ago. The total number of corona cases is now 1,006,394. However, the RKI assumes that many infections go unnoticed because many infected people show no or only minor symptoms.

The RKI gave the number of deaths related to the coronavirus at 426 – the highest value since the start of the pandemic. Health authorities reported the latest high value with 410 cases last Wednesday. The RKI estimates that about 696,100 people have now recovered.

According to the board report of Thursday evening, the so-called seven-day R-value was 0.90 (previous day: 0.87). This means that 100 infected people infect 90 more people. The value represents the occurrence of the infection eight to sixteen days ago. If the value remains below 1 for a longer period, the contamination percentage will decrease.

20 percent of the intensive care beds are not yet occupied

Moreover, the situation in the hospitals is deteriorating. According to the RKI, the number of corona patients treated in intensive care has risen sharply from 15 October to 15 November from 655 to 3395. Since then the increase has slowed somewhat and according to the RKI for the last time in 3826 patients, of whom 60 percent were ventilated. For example, 20 percent of the intensive care beds are currently unoccupied.

Contrary to what was hoped, the partial lockdown that has been in effect since the beginning of November, with the closure of bars and restaurants, for example, has not led to a significant decrease in the number of infections. The so-called 7-day incidence – the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week – has fluctuated around 140 nationwide for more than two weeks.

To cut these numbers, federal and state governments decided on Wednesday to extend the partial lockout until shortly before Christmas, with some stricter rules. Private gatherings with friends, relatives and acquaintances should be limited to a maximum of five people from your own household and another household. However, Christmas should be able to be celebrated in close family and friends with a maximum of ten people. Children up to 14 years are not included.

Chancellery chief Braun calls for common sense

Despite the easing around Christmas, people had to continue to act responsibly, the head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun, called on citizens. As a “celebration of privacy”, Christmas is a “certain unknown” in the risk assessment, Chancellor Helge Braun said Thursday night of the ZDF “Maybrit Illner” program. “Whether we prepare for Christmas in such a way and live with families in such a way that it becomes an infection problem, or we achieve the exact opposite – we really have it in our own hands,” says Braun.

Keeping contacts to an “bare minimum” is a prerequisite for meeting family members safely, Braun said. “No one would want to infect their closest relatives and relatives.” Therefore it depends a lot on everyone’s behavior in the week before Christmas.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn also called on citizens to take responsibility. “Ultimately, we cannot enforce what is needed in this pandemic with state rules alone,” Spahn said Thursday evening. ARD- “Extra”. People should take care of each other and maybe celebrate Christmas on a smaller scale than usual.
