The Toyota Supra is back!
After 17 years of interruption, the Toyota sports car returns. And to answer the eternal controversy: According to Toyota, it is really the supra. The production model is on the Detroit Auto Show (from January 14).
The basic formula for the athlete remains unchanged: take a straight-six with turbocharger, rear-wheel drive and a body with a long hood, two doors and a squat behind. Only this time BMW is on board: the two manufacturers share the development of Supra and Z4. Both sports cars are on the same platform and also the inline six-cylinder engine of the Supra comes from Munich.
The design of the new Supra is nonetheless independent. From bumper to bumper the Japanese measure with the Bavarian heart 4.38 meters. Particularly noticeable are the headlights and the curved body with the strongly shaped wheel arches. Inside you want to call: Hello, BMW! Although Toyota attaches great importance to independence, many switches, the center display and the rotary knob of the Z4 are clearly visible.
Equipment technology brings the Supra from the ground up with many: Active rear differential, adaptive suspension and 19-inch wheels are always there, as adaptive cruise control, Keyless Start, reversing camera or navigation system. Optionally there is leather, a thick sound system and a head-up display. As a prelude to the new Supra, the "A90 edition" can also be ordered. Limited to 90 copies, the special series is matte gray painted, has matte black alloy wheels and red leather upholstery.
At the launch Toyota offers the Supra with only one combination of engine and gearbox. It is a three-liter inline six-cylinder with twin-scroll turbo, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Just like in his BMW brother, Z4 makes the six-cylinder 340 hp and 500 Nm maximum torque.
For the performance Toyota has so far only the most necessary information: 4.3 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h. At 250 km / h the forward thrust of the electronic bolt is advanced.
Toyota already accepts orders. However, it may still take some time to deliver: although the production at Magna in Graz starts in March, out of a total of 900 supra destined for Europe in the summer of 2019, initially only 300 will come to Germany for dealers, the price starts at 62,900 euros.
